Animal Control Center Enforcement Duties
There six main functions in the enforcement area handled by the Veterinary Health Division of the Sangamon County Department of Public Health.
- Enforce all State of Illinois, Sangamon County, and City of Springfield statutes, or ordinances that pertain to dogs and cats.
- Impound animals found to be in violation of the above mentioned statutes and ordinances.
- Investigate all incidents in which a human has been bitten by a dog, cat, or other mammal and effect proper confinement and observation to insure that those bitten have not been exposed to an animal carrying the rabies virus.
- Act as Humane Investigators on behalf of the State of Illinois to insure that animals
are properly cared for by their owners.
- Investigate claims of domestic livestock injured or killed by dogs in Sangamon County.
- Effectuate control of and confinement of domestic livestock found running at large.
