Animal Control Center Enforcement Duties

There six main functions in the enforcement area handled by the Veterinary Health Division of the Sangamon County Department of Public Health.

  1. Enforce all State of Illinois, Sangamon County, and City of Springfield statutes, or ordinances that pertain to dogs and cats.

  2. Impound animals found to be in violation of the above mentioned statutes and ordinances.

  3. Investigate all incidents in which a human has been bitten by a dog, cat, or other mammal and effect proper confinement and observation to insure that those bitten have not been exposed to an animal carrying the rabies virus.

  4. Act as Humane Investigators on behalf of the State of Illinois to insure that animals are properly cared for by their owners.

  5. Investigate claims of domestic livestock injured or killed by dogs in Sangamon County.

  6. Effectuate control of and confinement of domestic livestock found running at large.
