Treasurer - Programs For Seniors, Veterans, And Disabled Citizens

Senior Citizen

Senior Citizen Exemption
Home Owners who are 65 or over can reduce the taxable value of their property by $4000. Taxpayers can determine if they received this exemption by visiting the tax look up screen. Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze
Home Owners who are 65 or over and a maximum total household income of $55,000 or under can freeze the taxable value of their property resulting in significant savings. Taxpayers can determine if they received this exemption by visiting the tax look up screen. Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program
Qualifying senior citizens may defer all or part of their property tax and special assessment payments under this tax relief program. Homeowners 65 and over with household income under $50,000 can defer paying property taxes on their residence by using up to 80% equity in their property. A lien is placed on the property and taxes do not become due until the property is sold or the taxpayer dies. To find out more please contact the Sangamon County Treasurer’s office at 217-753-6800.

Circuit Breaker
Senior citizens may qualify for a grant up to $700 to assist in paying property tax through the Circuit Breaker Grant Program. The Circuit Breaker program is administered by the Illinois Department on Aging. To find out more please contact the Department on Aging at 1-800-624-2459 or on the web at www.state.il.us/aging.


Disabled Citizen

Disabled Veteran Exemption
Certain disabled veterans can qualify to have up to $58,000 in taxable value exempted from taxation. The reduction in value can result in significant savings to the taxpayer. Taxpayers can determine if they received this exemption by visiting the tax look up screen. Disabled Veteran Standard Homestead Exemption
Disabled veterans can qualify to have up to $5,000 in taxable value exempted from taxation. The reduction in value can result in significant savings to the taxpayer. Taxpayers can determine if they received this exemption by visiting the tax look up screen. Disabled Persons' Homestead Exemption
Certain disabled Pesons can qualify to have $2,000 in taxable value exempted from taxation. The reduction in value can result in significant savings to the taxpayer. Taxpayers can determine if they received this exemption by visiting the tax look up screen.
