A number of programs are available to reduce the tax bills
of citizens of Sangamon County or to assist citizens in paying their real
estate taxes.
General Homestead Exemption
Homeowners can reduce the taxable value of their property by $6000. Taxpayers
can determine if they received this exemption by visiting the tax look

Senior Citizen Exemption
Homeowners who are 65 or over can reduce the taxable value of their property
by an additional $4000. Taxpayers can determine if they received this

Senior Citizen Assessment Freeze
Homeowners who are 65 or over and have a maximum total household income
of $55,000 or less, can freeze the taxable value of their property resulting
in significant savings. Taxpayers can determine if they received this

Homestead Improvement Exemption
Home Owners can delay up to four years the increase in fair market value
up to $75,000 of their property attributable to a home improvement. The
reduction in value for 4 years can result in significant savings to the
taxpayer. Taxpayers can determine if they received this exemption by visiting

Circuit Breaker
Senior citizens and disabled citizens may qualify for a grant up to $700
to assist in paying property tax through the Circuit Breaker Grant Program.
The Circuit Breaker program is administered by the Illinois Department

Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program
Qualifying senior citizens
may defer all or part of their property tax and special assessment payments
under this tax relief program. Homeowners 65 and over with household income
under $50,000 can defer paying property taxes on their residence by using
up to 80% equity in their property. A lien is filed on the property and
taxes do not become due until the property is sold or the taxpayer dies.

Disabled Veteran Exemption
Certain disabled veterans can qualify to have up to $58,000 in taxable
value exempted from taxation. The reduction in value can result in significant
savings to the taxpayer. Taxpayers can determine if they received this

Active Duty Military Deferral
Military personnel on active duty are eligible to defer the payment of
real estate taxes under the provisions of the Soldiers’and Sailors’ Civil
Relief Act, as amended. This deferral applies to taxes becoming due in
the period between your active duty date and 90 days from your release
