The mission of OEM is to enhance public safety by providing the citizenry with the necessary information, which it may use to mitigate, prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters that may threaten Sangamon County. OEM collects information on potential hazards to the County and gives early warning, if possible, when danger is imminent. OEM provides life safety underwater rescue and recovery on any body of water within the County.

OEM maintains and exercises an emergency operations plan. OEM also maintains equipment and trains a squad of volunteers whose efforts can be coordinated with other public safety providers for responses to emergencies and disasters within the County. OEM collects and maintains information to identify locations of hazardous materials storage within the County.

OEM consists of two (2) paid employees; the Director (Coordinator) and the Deputy Coordinator. The Deputy Coordinator is also the Chief of the Rescue Squad overseeing 32 volunteer members and 14 certified search and rescue canines under his command.
