The Sangamon County Department of Public Health is a certified health department as designated by the Illinois Department of Public Health. An eight-member Board of Health, consisting of two physicians, one dentist, one nurse, one county board member, and three people at-large, develops policy for public health in Sangamon County.

The role of the Department of Public Health is prevention and education through various personal, environmental and veterinarian health programs. Programs required by the Illinois Department of Public Health provided by this department include: Communicable Disease Control, Food Sanitation, Private Sewage and Potable Water.
