SERVICES The Department of Zoning administers the Sangamon County Zoning Ordinance,
adopted April 22, 1969. The ordinance applies to the unincorporated areas
of the county as well as within villages that do not have their own zoning
ordinance. The Department accepts petitions for zoning amendments, variances,
and conditional permitted uses. The Zoning Board of Appeals then conducts
a public hearing and makes a recommendation to the County Board for the final
decision.

Sangamon County adopted the 2000 International family of building codes,
the National Electrical Code 2002 edition, and the current edition
of the Illinois State Plumbing Code on May 8th, 2001, and they became
effective December 1, 2001. Permits are required for all new construction,
swimming
pools and fences with some exemptions for agriculture. A Change
of Occupancy Permit maybe needed if the use changes of an existing
building.
Pursuant to Illinois Compiled Statutes commercial plans must be
submitted according to the Illinois Architectural Practice Act
of 1989, the Illinois Professional
Land Surveyors Act of 1989, the Illinois Professional Engineering Practice
Act of 1989, and the Illinois Structural Engineering Licensing
Act of 1989.
Residential plans must include floor, roof, and foundation drawings.

codes May 8th, 2001, and they became effective December 1, 2001. Permits
are also required to construct swimming pools and fences. In addition, the
department responds to the complaints regarding violations and processes
appeals from any person aggrieved by a decision of the Zoning Administrator.

LIQUOR LICENSING DEPARMENT INFORMATION
To apply for a Sangamon County Liquor License you must be in the
unincorporated area of the County and must have proper zoning. If you need
