County Board

District 24
Term: 2008 - 2012

Andy Van Meter (R)
6 Fair Oaks
Springfield, IL 62704

Andy Van Meter was elected to the Sangamon County Board in 1994. Andy Van Meter was elected Chairman of the Sangamon County Board in February, 2000. He has been the unanimous choice as chairman since that first appointment. He is responsible for making appointments for 30 boards and commissions and serves as an ex officio member of all standing committees of the County Board.

During his years on the Board, Andy has served as Chairman of the Election Oversight Committee, Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee and a member of the Court Services Committee. Due to his fine business background and dedication to maintain a balanced county budget, Andy was asked to chair the RFP Review Committee, which oversaw the new Sangamon County Juvenile Center build. His commitment to running an efficient county government under tax caps has been evident by the Board’s implementation of a target based budget policy.

The chairmanship and elected County Board representative are not considered to be full-time positions. Andy is president of Design Ideas, a company employing 100 people in Springfield and 25 people over seas, which he started in 1982. Design Ideas is based in Springfield but requires him to travel the globe to develop new household products to manufacture and market. He is a graduate of Springfield High School, Princeton University and Stanford Law School. Andy is a published author of the book “Always My Friend: A History of the State Journal-Register and Springfield.” He is also an Eagle Scout.
